About The Silly William Gambit

Eccentric chess prodigy Silly William finds himself on a train bound for Hell (or Philadelphia, as it is known in some circles). When a mysterious entity that only plays the four-move checkmate attack hears of Silly William’s skill, it offers him his freedom if he can manage to defeat the entity in a best of seven chess matches. Fortunately for Silly William, he has dedicated his entire chess career to specifically refuting the four-move checkmate attack. And he will teach it to you now like his soul depends on it!

Letter from the Author:

"Addiction is one of the fastest growing diseases in the world. It knows no race, no age, no class, no nationality, no sexuality, no political orientation. And yet across each of these demographics, one thing holds true: no one particularly wants to talk about addiction. The stigma stems, in no small part, from the still unanswered societal question of “is addiction a disease or a choice?” And yet, despite the progress made (particularly in liberal circles), it can remain difficult to fully reconcile one’s intellectual understanding of addiction as a disease, with the anger, sadness, confusion, and grief that arises when witnessing a loved one reach for the bottle once again. Silly William doesn’t weigh in on whether addiction is a disease, a choice, or somewhere in between, but it knows we can never arrive at the answer without continuing the conversation.

One year ago, addiction claimed the life of one of my childhood best friends. He was just 26 years old. He never told us how deeply he was struggling with it. I wish that he had. This is a letter to say that I loved him. And a promise that it is never too late to ask for help."
